Vouw, plisseer en vorm. Working with hand and machine stitch, and an introduction to a pleating machine, the workshop will explore both formal and more organic sculptural possibilities of pleating and folding as a means of exploring a surface. Techniques used will draw on aspects of shibori, heat setting, and origami techniques. Simple methods of printing, colouring and marking cloth will be introduced enabling you to use this to enhance form. Participants continuing on from ‘Traces and aerial views’ will be able to capitalise on learning and further develop ideas.
By the end of the course you will be able to
· Use folding and pleating and techniques derived from shibori as a means to texture the surface and shape form
· Use heat setting
· Make and use a 2-part origami mould
· Make decisions about colour and mark in relation to form
· Create samples using these techniques
· Develop a sample or series of samples into larger piece, in line with personal interests and experience.
The course will involve demonstrations, visual presentations, exploration and development of ideas and techniques, group and individual tuition
